Our DNA Matching Pashtuns of Afghanistan and Pakistan

Pashtun People
We Jews with Q (the Y haplogroup DNA)  make up only 5% of the Jewish male population today.  Being the Cohen gene is J1, often J1c3d, from Aaron, brother of Moses and his lineage, we wonder.

Our Goldfoot line's Y haplogroup DNA testing  was labeled as Q-L245 when we started.
Is Q-L245 found in modern Arab populations?  Yes
Is Q-L245 found in modern Anatolian populatons?  Yes
Is Q-L245 found in modern Iran and Iraq?  Yes
Is Q-L245 found from the modern locations of the Ancient city of Ur down to the tip of Saudi Arabia and Oman?  Yes
Does that cover the places where ancient Israel, Judah, and Sumaria were?  Yes.

There you are. I figure we were in Ur, now a part of Iraq, where Abraham was found to be in the Bible.  We were with him in his journeys, maybe married into the family or as a servant, for Abraham, I expect, would have been a J1, of the Cohen gene, for Moses is a direct descendant of his as well.  We wound up in Egypt with the rest, and were taken by the Assyrians in 721 BCE eastward again, where Abraham originally came from.  Those of the northern tribes taken by Assyrians were called the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel.  My family became one of the Ashkenazi Jews that went to Germany instead.
Questions were answered by Rebekah Canada, leader of our group on FTDNA.

My brother's Y haplogroup titles have been updated  through various stages of higher testing:
1. Q1b1a
2. Q-(M 242)
3. Q-(M 378)
4. Q-L245
5.Q-Y2200
***6. QBZ67

I have found that at the level of testing of 12 alleles of Q, my brother matches:
1. someone from Republic of Dagistan, Kaitak
2. someone from Republic of Dagistan, Avar
3. someone from Turkey
4. someone with an Arabic name
5. someone from Baghdad

And now, it has been found that many Pashtuns from Afghanistan and Pakistan share Q-M242.
"Paragroup Q-M242 (xMEH2, xM378) (of Haplogroup Q-M242 (Y-DNA)) was found at 16.3% in Pashtuns. Haplogroup Q-M242 is also found at a frequency of 18% in Pashtuns in the Afghan capital of Kabul.

"Kabul is the capital of Afghanistan as well as its largest city, located in the eastern section of the country. According to a 2015 estimate, the population of the city was around 3,678,033 which includes all the major ethnic groups. Wikipedia.  So our matches are 18% of the people of Kabul, the Pashtuns.

"Over the past decade, Kabul has become one of the world’s fastest-growing cities. The toppling of the Taliban in 2001 and the hope of increased security and economic possibilities enticed many Afghans to move here: people displaced by fighting in the countryside, refugees returning from Pakistan and Iran, and hordes of labourers simply looking for a better life."

"The Pashtuns (ethnic Afghans) make up the largest ethnic group in Afghanistan, comprising between 42% and 60% of the country's population. Their main territory, sometimes called Pashtunistan,[by whom?] is between the Hindu Kush mountains in Afghanistan and the Indus River in neighboring Pakistan, where they are the second largest ethnic group. After the rise of the Hotaki dynasty in 1709 and the Durrani Empire in 1747, Pashtuns expanded by forming communities north of the Hindu Kush and elsewhere in Afghanistan.

The term "Afghan" is synonymous with the ethnonym "Pashtun" and has been mentioned as early as the 3rd century, referring to the tribes inhabiting the lands south of the Hindu Kush around the Sulaiman Mountains."

Pashtuns make up  an estimated 27.7 million (15%) of Pakistan's total population. The largest urban population of Pashtuns is interestingly found in the southern coastal city of Karachi with a fluctuating population estimated up to 7 million. This is then followed by Peshawar, Quetta, Rawalpindi, Islamabad, and Lahore in descending order

One characteristic my father had was a cleft in his chin.  I just saw that this morning on a Middle Easterner.  Another thing is that my brother, myself and my 1st cousin Goldfoot are all left-handed.  I wonder what the % of our matches of Q also have this left-handedness.  It sure makes writing Hebrew from right to left easier!  Are there any other lefties in our family?  Maybe it's from our grandmother's Jermulowske side.

Rabbis in Our Family

Nadene Goldfoot
RASHI: Rabbi Solomon Yitzhaki, February 22, 1040- 13 July 1105
born in Troyes, France, studied in Rhineland
Our Rabbinical family relations are growing.  Through DNA testing, specifically using familyfinder through familytreedna out of Houston, Texas,

Rabbi Samson Wertheimer 1658-1724  born in Worms, Germany,
moved to Vienna, Austria. Samuel Oppenheimer was his uncle.
I have found out that our Goldfoot line is connected to Rabbi Wertheimer of Germany and Austria.  He, in turn, was connected to Rabbi RASHI, and RASHI was a direct descendant of King David of Israel.

Now I find that we are also connected to a Rabbi Isaac ben Eliezer Halevi who was also the Chief Rabbi of Worms, Germany.

"According to tradition, Rashi was first brought to learn Torah by his father on Shavuot day at the age of five. His father was his main Torah teacher until his death when Rashi was still a youth. At the age of 17 he married and soon after went to learn in the yeshiva of Rabbi Yaakov ben Yakar in Worms, returning to his wife three times yearly, for the Days of Awe, Passover and Shavuot. When Rabbi Yaakov died in 1064, Rashi continued learning in Worms for another year in the yeshiva of his relative, Rabbi Isaac ben Eliezer Halevi, who was also chief rabbi of Worms. Then he moved to Mainz, where he studied under another of his relatives, Rabbi Isaac ben Judah, the rabbinic head of Mainz and one of the leading sages of the Lorraine region straddling France and Germany.
Rashi's teachers were students of Rabbeinu Gershom and Rabbi Eliezer Hagadol, leading Talmudists of the previous generation. From his teachers, Rashi imbibed the oral traditions pertaining to the Talmud as they had been passed down for centuries, as well as an understanding of the Talmud's unique logic and form of argument. Rashi took concise, copious notes from what he learned in yeshiva, incorporating this material in his commentaries."
"Rashi had no sons, but his three daughters, Miriam, Yocheved, and Rachel, all married Talmudic scholars. Legends exist that Rashi's daughters wore tefillin. While some women in medieval Ashkenaz did wear tefillin, there is no evidence that Rashi's daughters did or did not do so.[20]
  • 1. Rashi's oldest daughter, Yocheved, married Meir ben Samuel; their four sons were: Shmuel (Rashbam) (born 1080), Yitzchak (Rivam) (born 1090), Jacob (Rabbeinu Tam) (born 1100), and Shlomo the Grammarian, all of whom were among the most prolific of the Baalei Tosafot, leading rabbinic authorities who wrote critical and explanatory glosses on the Talmud which appear opposite Rashi's commentary on every page of the Talmud. Yocheved's daughter, Chanah, was a teacher of laws and customs relevant to women.
  • 2. Rashi's middle daughter, Miriam, married Judah ben Nathan, who completed the commentary on the Talmud Makkotwhich Rashi was working on when he died.[21] Their daughter Alvina was a learned woman whose customs served as the basis for later halakhic decisions. Their son Yom Tov later moved to Paris and headed a yeshiva there, together with his brothers Shimshon and Eliezer.
  • 3. Rashi's youngest daughter, Rachel, married (and divorced) Eliezer ben Shemiah."

Kalonymus Family:

Among the prominent members of the Kalonymus family in Italy and Germany were KALONYMUS OF LUCCA, a paytan, who lived in Italy probably in the ninth century; *MOSES BEN KALONYMUS, a paytan, who lived in Italy but who moved to Mainz, and influenced the earlypaytanim in Germany, especially *SIMEON BEN ISAAC; KALONYMUS BEN JUDAH HA-BAḤUR (the Younger), a paytan in Mainz at the end of the 11th century and the beginning of the 12th, who witnessed the persecutions of 1096 and who wrote of them in many liturgical poems; KALONYMUS BEN MOSES OF LUCCA, a talmudic scholar, halakhist, and author of many responsa, who probably also emigrated to Mainz; KALONYMUS BEN MESHULLAM HA-PARNAS, the leader of the Mainz community during the persecutions of 1096, who was martyred with his whole community; KALONYMUS BEN ISAAC HA-ZAKEN (the Elder), a communal leader and halakhist, and the founder of the branch of the Kalonymus family which most influenced German Jewry during the 12th and 13th centuries; his son *SAMUEL BEN KALONYMUS HE-ḤASID, the founder of the Ḥasidei Ashkenaz, author of a part of Sefer Ḥasidim and other works; Samuel's son,*JUDAH B. SAMUEL HE-ḤASID, who was the principal leader of the Ḥasidei Ashkenaz and the author of Sefer Ḥasidim. Other descendants of Kalonymus ha-Zaken were *JUDAH B. KALONYMUS B. MEIR OF SPEYER, author of the monumental talmudic lexicon,Seder Yiḥusei Tanna'im ve-Amora'im; and *JUDAH B. KALONYMUS B. MOSES OF MAINZ, a talmudic scholar and a poet, who was the father of *Eleazar of Worms. Eleazar's children were murdered by the crusaders, probably terminating his family line. The descendants of Judah b. Samuel he-Ḥasid, however, carried on for at least three more generations, giving rise to such scholars as MOSES ZALTMAN, son of Judah, who wrote a commentary on the Torah; *Eleazar b. Moses ha-Darshan, author of mystical and theological works; and MOSES B. ELEAZAR, great-grandson of Judah he-Ḥasid. KALONYMUS BEN GERSHON, a halakhist, also flourished in the 13th century. Among other paytanim of the Kalonymus family were *Meshullam ben Moses of the 11th century; MOSES BEN MESHULLAM OF LUCCA(probably the ninth century); KALONYMUS BEN MESHULLAM OF MAINZ, c. 1000; and notably *Meshullam b. Kalonymus of Rome of the tenth century, a paytan and halakhist who had contact with Gershom b. Judah, Me'or ha-Golah.
The name Kalonymus appears also among some families in Provence, where several great scholars and writers bear that name, for example the 13th-century writers Kalonymus ha-Nasi of Beaucaire and Kalonymus ben Kalonymus of Arles, author of Even Boḥan. However, it is not known whether the Provençal rabbis of this name were connected with the Italian-German family."

Goldfoot and Oster Surprise Match

Nadene Goldfoot
In 1939 a 23 year old Werner Oster was one of the last Jews to get out of Germany.  In order to do so, he had to be sponsored and promised to have a job so as not to be a burden on the USA economy.  My great uncle, Max Turn,  signed to get him out and in turn got his nephew, Maurice Goldfoot, to give him a job in his new flegling Lincoln Wholesale Meats Company  as a sausage maker.  So Werner went from Boppard to Hamburg, Germany and onto New York City

He had been put in a prison/concentration camp before he left.  The reason was for slapping a cow, which was "cruelty to animals". His father was a butcher, and Werner had bought the cow from a farmer and was walking it home.  The treatment was cruel in the prison and he didn't care to talk about it, but Uncle Max knew what he had gone through.   This happened just at the beginning of the Holocaust.   He was probably assaulted by the guards and forced to eat raw meat such as pork.  His parents gave him linens  and things to take with him.  His mother had been Rosa Ullmann and her  family had owned a linen factory.  He came to New York and lived there for a year.  He was sponsored by the B'nai Brith.  Uncle Max Tern, who lived in La Grande, Oregon sponsored him and sent for him to come to Portland from N.Y.   He came here and my uncle Max got him a job with my father,  Maurice Goldfoot.

Werner's father was Ferdinand Oster.  Ferdinand was a butcher and lived on Kirchenstrasse Street in Boppard.  Boppard is a beautiful small town on the banks of the Rhine River.  It is a popular stop on the river with the many boats that go by.  Koblenz is also on the Rhine River and is bigger. His father had served in the German army and was a decorated soldier in the service of the Kaiser, but was forced to scrub the streets because he was a Jew.  Many wore their uniforms while doing this to show people they had been good citizens.  His parents and 16 year old red-headed sister died in one of the camps in Poland in the Holocaust.  Werner had been able to get out, but could not get his parents out.  By that time it was too late.  The Nazis weren't allowing anymore to leave.  They had gone through a lot to just get Werner out.

Texas had been sponsoring Jewish refugees., so he worked in Texas first, then New York, then in La Grande for Max Tern in Max's furniture store.   Then my father heard about him through Uncle Max and sent for him to work with him.

I  found the information on immigration from Germany.  Werner came over as a butcher on the ship George Washington.  Last residence was Boppard and his immigration paper was issued in Stuttgarten.  He was born in Westerburg.  A friend listed was Arthur Rose.

My brother, David, spent time in Germany as a foreign exchange student after the war.  To get to Koblenz, he said "we went right thru Boppard, which is only about 9 kilometers from where we were staying in Koblenz. Boppard is a beautiful little village right on the Rhine, which is probably the most beautiful part of Germany. I had opportunities to go visit Boppard but I found I couldn't do it. I talked in German to several people who pronouced German just like Uncle Werner did, and I just felt really sad about what happened to him in his life and that I wasn't around when he died, so I just couldn't do it."

From Werner's youngest daughter I learned that " I also had known that he landed in New York, he worked 1 year there as a butcher in the World's Fair, and then was sponsored by another Jewish agency to head west, and Aunt Alice via the agency took him in when she lived in ... I think LaGrande, OR, where Uncle Max had a furniture store at the time.  But I think they were closing the store there and they all moved to Portland, which is when my father moved with them and was hired by Uncle Maurice, and then he met Mother, and on their first date, he said, "Someday you shall be my wife."  And 3 months later, she was.

The hiring was a plan made in heaven, for Maurice had an unmarried sister, Ann.  They hit it off right away and produced 5 girls.

Maurice Goldfoot on left and Werner Oster on right with family and children in abt 1944

Little did we know that we Goldfoots were genetically related to Werner's Oster  family.  We've recently had the familyfinder DNA autosomal  test through familytreedna out of Houston, Texas, and we wondered why Werner's youngest daughter matched others with double the amount of chromosome segments than David and I did and laughed about it, saying, maybe she's getting some from the Oster side, not really taking it seriously.

Sandra matched with Phyllis L. Oster with 25 segments of 104.36382cMs and was listed as 4th cousins.  She also matched Eunice PrOSTERman with 19 segments of 65.54225cMs and was listed as 5th cousins.  They are not part of her immediate family.

But lo and behold, I also match a Phyllis L. Oster with 14 segments of 52.09047cMs and am listed as a 4th cousin and I also match a Eunice Prosterman with 15 segments of 46.78779cMs.   Sandra and I are 1st cousins and we match each other with 55 segments of 829.92612cMs.  My son, Steve Henwood matches his 1st cousin once removed or 2nd cousin, Sandra Oster, with 34 segments of 372.1421 cMs. Her nephew, Aaron Bloom,  matches Sandra with 66 segments of 1780.36885cMs.

David matches Eunice Prosterman with 18 segments of 55.26214 cMs and is listed as a 5th cousin. Eunice and Sandra have some matching genes, so she is originally an Oster as I see it.

Sandra also matches a Floyd Oster with 18 segments of 91.402cMs and is listed as a 4th cousin with him, so there is another line of Osters we haven't identified with as yet.

The beauty of this all is that my great Uncle through my father rescued a Jewish man unknown to them who was already a relative to the Goldfoots.  Evidently our roots go back to Germany as we have found out through the Halpern group on FTDNA and connect to the Rabbi of Worms through Samson or his brother, Moses Wertheimer (January 17, 1658-August 6, 1724),  who in turn are  connected to RASHI, our very famous Biblical commentator (1040-1105 CE) who in turn has oral history of connecting to King David.

Not surprising to me is that the distance from Worms to Boppard is only 54 miles or 86 kilometers.
The distance from Boppard to Oberfell is 7 miles or 11.26 kilometers.  It is easy to see that we connect with these other Osters from Worms

Worms was a famous center of Jewish scholarship in the Medieval Period and Rashi studied there in 1055 to 1065.  "Worms  is a city in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany, on the Rhine River about 60 kilometres (40 mi) south-southwest of Frankfurt-am-Main."  Samson Wertheimer was born in Worms, Germany, son of Joseph Josel Wertheimer 1626-May 2, 1713) and received his education at the yeshivas of Worms and Frankfurt am Main.  Though the Jewish community of Worms was annihilated in the First Crusade, it re-established shortly afterward and again was destroyed in the Black Death outbreaks in 1349.  Jews were expelled in 1615 and restrictions were imposed on them in 1641 during our known ancestor's day.  A massacre was carried out by the soldiers of Louis XIV in 1689.  Emancipation was bestowed on Jews after the French Revolution.

It could very well be that if we can go back far enough, we'll find we are connected to other Jewish people that we never realized.  Already the saying is that if a married couple digs back 5 generations they can find they are related, and my aunt and uncle just proved this.  This is what makes genealogy and DNA so exciting.

A friend was Arthur Rose, as I mentioned.  This strikes me as interesting, maybe as an example of synchronicity,  because Werner named his 4th daughter "Rose" and she married an  Arthur.
